The aim of getting the best possible long-term return from the Australian Government’s record investment in sport has prompted the Australian Sports Commission to introduce an improved and more transparent Annual Sport Performance Review process.

With a focus on developing sustainable sport for Australia to deliver increased international sporting success and boost sport participation levels, the government is investing a record $1.2 billion dollars over four years.

In 2011 the Australian Sports Commission took the important step of introducing an annual performance review (previously held every four years) as part of the ongoing funding cycle.  This new process will deliver a more contemporary performance review aimed at helping sports to focus on their long-term planning.

Australian Sports Commission Chief Executive, Simon Hollingsworth, said reviewing funding annually sports will ensure accurate and timely feedback and advice on how they are performing, meaning they’ll be better placed to improve their business for long-term success rather than short-term results.

‘As part of its strategic direction the Australian Sports Commission remains committed to working closely with our sports partners to collectively achieve sustained international success and increased participation,’ said Mr Hollingsworth.

‘In developing and implementing this new process the Commission listened to valuable feedback from sports and made a number of changes to make it more open and transparent, including giving sports greater opportunity to review and comment on their assessments during the process.’

To complement the new process the Commission has released a new Annual Sport Performance Review overview document to help all sports understand its key principles, roles and responsibilities.  The overview aims to balance certainty and continuity with the need to achieve accountability for the Australian Government investment.

The Australian Sports Commission already provides support to funded and non-funded sports.  This includes but is not limited to, access to coaching and officiating programs, governance support, planning and education opportunities and assistance to support develop inclusive participation programs.
