The selection competition to decide Australia’s team for the 2017 Taekwondo World Championships was held at the AIS Combat Centre on 26th February. Qualification for the team was a straight-forward equation, with winners of each division in this single competition being selected to the team for the benchmark event, which will be held in Korea in June.

Rio Olympians Carmen Marton, Hayder Shykara and Safwon Khalil all won their divisions and will represent Australia again on the world stage. It was pleasing to see a number of athletes who have been involved in AIS Combat Centre’s Emerging Athletes program rise to the top in their first year in senior competition. Damon Cavey and Chelsea Hobday both won their divisions, and Jackson Latcham won the silver medal  in a close-fought final against and experienced categorised athlete. The Emerging Athlete program, has involved annual training camps at the AIS Combat Centre since 2014 for Australia’s best junior athletes, allowing them a unique opportunity to train with athletes from around Australia as well as invited international athletes from Egypt and Korea.

Australian Taekwondo will hold two preparatory training camps on 3-7 May and 2-4 June at the AIS Combat Centre for the Australia team and a development squad ahead of the World Championships in June 2017.
