How can I become a nutritionist?

Dietitians/nutritionists are trained to provide a wide range of professional services to promote health and well-being in individuals, groups and communities. Not all nutritionists are dietitians. Dietitians must have undertaken a nutrition and dietetic course accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) to be eligible for membership to DAA.

If you are considering choosing a career in nutrition and dietetics visit the DAA website for information regarding suitable tertiary courses and career opportunities. Most courses are four to five years in duration.

Sports Nutrition is a new and emerging area within Nutrition. Once you have completed a degree in nutrition and dietetics and are eligible for membership to DAA you can complete further study in the field of Sports Nutrition.

To become a full member of Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) you need to be a full member of DAA and have completed an SDA accredited sports nutrition unit. The SDA website provides details of accredited units.

These pages provide information for anyone interested in becoming a sports dietitian or those interested in working at the AIS in Sports Nutrition.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and nutritionist?

Many different courses provide qualifications in nutrition. In Australia, there is no government regulation over the use of terms such as ‘dietitian’ or ‘nutritionist’. However, professional bodies such as the Dietitians Association of Australia and Nutrition Australia provide criteria for professional membership.

Members of Nutrition Australia typically have tertiary qualifications in areas such as nutrition, food science and public health. Dietitians have tertiary qualifications in similar areas as well as dietetics. Dietitians have completed substantial professional practice in clinical nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service management.

Dietitians are qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy or clinical nutrition consultations in individual and group settings. Sports Dietitians at the AIS are all Accredited Practicing Dietitians and Accredited Sports Dietitians.

Sports Dietitians at the AIS are all Accredited Practicing Dietitians and Accredited Sports Dietitians.

How do I become a sports dietitian?

To become a Sports Dietitian you must first become an Accredited Sports Dietitian. This involves studying a course recognised by the Dietitians Association of Australia. The next step is to specialise in sports nutrition. Sports Dietitians Australia outlines pathways to become recognised as an expert in sports nutrition.

As for work experience...

AIS Sports Nutrition offers a limited number of placements each year for students undertaking a university degree in dietetics. We only consider formal requests made via university placement coordinators.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept secondary school students wishing to gain industry experience in nutrition.

To gain experience in sports nutrition, become a member of Sports Dietitians Australia and create contacts via local networks.
