The AIS Sports Draft team will conduct selection trials for athletes this Saturday in Melbourne and Perth.

Over 60 participants will undergo rigorous testing at the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) and more than 50 people will undergo the same tests at the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) this Saturday.

The 2014 AIS Sports Draft will focus on:

• athletics
• rugby 7s: women
• hockey: goalies (women)
• combat sports
• paddling sports: kayak and canoe (sprint and slalom)
• cycling: track sprint.

The AIS and Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) have also joined forces to conduct a Para-sports Draft with the first testing session to be held on Sunday in Melbourne, including approximately 20 athletes.

The Para-sports Draft has a focus on athletics, cycling, swimming, canoeing, rowing, triathlon, table tennis, boccia, para-alpine and snowboarding for individuals with cerebral palsy and neurological brain impairments.

AIS Director Matt Favier said the 2014 Sports Drafts were developed on the back of a successful inaugural sports draft for boxing and judo held last year.

'It’s pleasing to see national sporting organisations (NSOs), the Australian Paralympic Committee, Australian University Sport, the AIS and numerous other stakeholders working closely to find athletes who may be able to transfer their skills, knowledge and winning ways into these Olympic and Paralympic sports,' Favier said.

'Athletes who make it through the sports drafts selection trials will attend camps at the AIS, receive 12 months of high performance coaching at select venues, and possibly go on to receive further expert support from their new NSO.

'The draft is an initiative of Australia’s Winning Edge game plan looking for international success including at the Olympics, Paralympics and Commonwealth Games.'

Further AIS Sports Draft selection trials will be held in Brisbane and Sydney on October 25, Canberra on November 8 and Hobart and Adelaide on November 15.

Further Para-sports Draft section trials will be held in, Sydney on October 26, Canberra November 9, Adelaide November 15, Perth November 23, Brisbane November 30 and Hobart December 7.
