Program goals:
Teachers at a Secondary School in Mount Isa were concerned about the decrease in physically active students in Years 7 and 8, girls in particular. The school also recognised that they have a large cohort of students from non-English speaking backgrounds, and wanted to engage these students in more physical activity.
The school’s aim was to increase the awareness of physical activity, and also increase participation, particularly by girls, in their existing Rugby League extra-curricular activity offered at the school.
The Secondary Schools Coordinator used the Sporting Schools Booking System to book a sport package with the National Rugby League (NRL). They selected the NRL League Integrated Fundamentals Training (LIFT) program, designed for secondary schools and educates teenagers about the importance of movement to enhance physical literacy. The NRL program was run over 4 sessions during the term, and involved 80 students (30 males and 50 females).
Student Beneficiaries:
Students in Years 7 and 8, with a focus on engaging females and students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
Term delivery plan:
Sport | Sport Package | Sessions | Participants |
|---|---|---|---|
NRL | NRL League Integrated Fundamentals Training (LIFT) | 4 | 80 |
Outcomes:
The delivered NRL LIFT program provided the students with new opportunities, and the teachers immediately noticed an increase in physical activity during school breaks as students practiced what they had learnt during the NRL LIFT sessions. The school has also had a boost in participation in their existing Rugby League extra-curricular activity.
