Working at the ASC
Australian Sports Commission
The Australian Sports Commission provides an opportunity for employees to combine their love and appreciation of sport, exercise and good health with their work, to assist all Australians to gain from and enjoy their involvement in sport, regardless of age or location.
The Commission was established via the Australian Sports Commission Act in 1989, and is partly funded by the Australian Government. The organisational chart shows the seven divisions; the Australian Institute of Sport, Commercial and Facilities, Community Sport, Corporate Services, Finance, National Sports Programs, and Sport Performance and Development. Within these divisions various programs operate to achieve our mission:
The Commission has offices located in over 70 locations Australia wide with the Head Office in Canberra. A training facility in Varese, Italy is under construction.
Employment is under a Collective Workplace Agreement that details employment conditions and rates of pay, and a code of conduct that identifies the values and standards expected of all employees.
We asked some employees to share their feelings about what it is like to work at the Commission:
'This is without a doubt the best organisation anyone could want to work in. All the people here share a great passion for sport which drives them to improve the quality of sporting opportunities of all Australians at all levels. We are laying the foundations for the future of sport in this country and along the way providing the best possible pathways for our next generation of elite athletes to follow and emerge from. Having the opportunity to contribute towards this approach is a privilege.’
[Carl Currey, Unit Manager – Indigenous Sport]
‘The Commission is a fantastic place to work – set in a natural environment which supports easy access to lunchtime recreation/physical activity pursuits and alongside the daily training environment of many of the world’s best athletes and coaches at the Australian Institute of Sport.
As one of the ACT’s top tourist venues and an internationally recognised world class sporting facility it is a hive of activity with never a dull moment. The variety of visitors to the site, whether for business or leisure, provides an ever-changing landscape as athletes and coaches work relentlessly to achieve their goals at the various training facilities. The passion to succeed evident with the athletes and coaches is paralleled by the administrative staff, building and supporting Australia’s sporting framework. This provides a stimulating and highly motivating work environment – highly recommended!’
[Judy Flanagan, Director – Community Sport]
‘Every day the work is different: interesting, challenging, satisfying or frustrating – but never boring. Even in times of stress, there is always humour. There is a genuine willingness and support provided to accommodate staff’s personal commitments, family responsibilities and life outside work. There is a wonderful mix of age, gender, sexuality, cultural background, disability, skill and experience all brought together by a passion for sport.’
[Debbie Simms, Senior Sport Consultant – Sport Ethics]
