Darcy Macdonald

I am enrolled in a bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra and have been completing this course full time (12 credit points per semester). I am expecting this course to take me 4 years to complete. I selected this course as I hope to eventually work as a physiotherapist with athletes and sporting teams at some point in my career.

My passion for sport has not only driven my pursuits as an athlete but is also the main reason behind my desire to pursue a career in Physiotherapy. I hope that I will be able to assist other athletes in their athletic journeys, whether that be helping someone return from an injury or helping prevent injuries. Completing my degree will open doors to many different fields within physio, allowing me to combine my love for sport with my professional life.

Through my studies, I will develop many skills that will benefit me personally, and professionally. Most notably, my communication skills will benefit from the highly practical physio degree. Throughout my course, I will be involved in many hands on, in-person classes, which will provide numerous opportunities to practice communicating effectively with peers, thereby developing skills that are crucial in my career and life.

During my own athletic career, I have also faced many setbacks through injury, most notably in rupturing my ACL. My own rehabilitation journey sparked an interest in the field of physiotherapy, as I experienced how different practitioners operate. I still remember the people who had major influence on my successful return to sport, and I hope to provide that same support and guidance for someone else facing similar challenges.

Ultimately, becoming a physio will hopefully allow me to work alongside sport as well as make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
