Water Polo. Australian Catholic University. Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary).

Georgia Chapman

I am studying a degree in primary and secondary teaching, which is designed to provide myself, a future educator, with the tools I need to teach effectively in both primary and secondary school levels. The course covers a wide range of subjects, from pedagogy and classroom management to educational psychology and curriculum design. It also gives me opportunities for practical placements in schools, where students can apply their knowledge in real-world teaching environments.

I chose this course for personal reasons. My experience in school was challenging, primarily due to mental health issues that were not identified in primary school and not well understood at the time. I struggled with anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, but back then, mental health wasn't as openly discussed or recognised. I felt isolated and misunderstood, which made my academic journey even harder, to the point where I went into distance education in year 9 to complete my schooling. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in teaching, specifically with the goal of being the kind of educator who can offer understanding and support to students facing similar challenges. I want to make a difference for those who might feel overlooked or alienated, as I once did.

By entering the education field, I aim to create a supportive environment where every student’s mental and emotional well-being is valued alongside their academic progress. This course allows me to learn how to provide that kind of support and guidance to the next generation of students, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and understood.
