Water Polo. The University of Western Australia. Bachelor of Science.
I am enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Marine Science, at the University of Western Australia (UWA). This three-year course combines theoretical learning with practical fieldwork, covering topics like oceanography, marine ecology, and conservation biology. Core units include "Marine Systems" and "Coastal Processes," where I study ocean dynamics and ecosystem management, alongside electives like "Marine Conservation and Fisheries Management." The program emphasises hands-on experience through lab work, data analysis, and field trips to coastal sites like Rottnest Island, equipping me with skills to address real-world environmental challenges.
I chose this course because of my deep connection to water through water polo and a passion for protecting Australia’s marine environments. Growing up near the coast and travelling overseas to places like Indonesia and Fiji, I’ve witnessed the impacts of climate change and pollution on our oceans, inspiring me to pursue a career in marine conservation. UWA’s globally recognised Marine Science program, with its proximity to the Indian Ocean and access to cutting-edge research facilities, offers an ideal platform to explore these issues. The course aligns with my athletic discipline, enhancing my understanding of aquatic systems while fostering resilience and teamwork—skills I honed in water polo.
This degree will prepare me to contribute to sustainable marine policies or research, complementing my goal to represent Australia in sport. By blending my athletic and academic pursuits, I aim to advocate for healthy oceans and inspire others to value our natural world.
