Rowing. The University of New South Wales. Bachelor of Commerce.

Jacqui Swick

I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce, a course I chose because I see myself excelling in the corporate world beyond my athletic career. Much like rowing, business requires teamwork, strategic thinking, and resilience; skills I have honed as an elite athlete. Studying commerce allows me to develop a strong foundation in finance, management, and leadership, which will help me transition into a career where I can make an impact.

What excites me most about this course is how it complements my experience as an athlete. Elite sport teaches discipline, adaptability, and teamwork, qualities that are invaluable in any professional setting. By studying commerce, I can bridge the gap between sport and business, leveraging my athletic mindset to lead and innovate. I am particularly passionate about helping others recognise the value of elite sporting skills in the corporate world. Athletes develop unique leadership abilities, decision-making skills under pressure, and a relentless pursuit of excellence; qualities that businesses seek in high performers.

My decision to study commerce was also influenced by the personal growth I have experienced balancing elite sport with academics. I am not a natural scholar, but pursuing a degree alongside my rowing career has taught me discipline, time management, and the importance of a balanced lifestyle. It has pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, build a strong network beyond sport, and challenge myself intellectually.

Moving across the country for rowing meant leaving behind my established support system. However, university has opened doors to new connections, diverse perspectives, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Just as I push myself to be the best in rowing, I am committed to excelling in my studies, ensuring a successful transition into life beyond sport.
