Sailing. The University of Queensland. Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours).

Jarrod Jones

I have chosen to study the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities, with an extended major in Western Civilisation at the University of Queensland, because of my deep interest in ethics and discussion. Furthermore, I am consistently passionate about standing up for what is right, and have a clear sense of right and wrong; which has been reflected in my consistent involvement in extracurricular endeavours such as debating and Ethics Olympiad. Following a year of study in Advanced Humanities, I will then move to a dual degree of Advanced Humanities and Law, where I hope to eventually practice in the fields of law or public policy. In turn, the skills I am able to develop will help to contribute to upholding ethical, moral and legal righteousness within society and also help fight for the rights of others.

Within the degree, I am able to gain a deep understanding the intellectual traditions, ethical frameworks, and social constructs that have shaped the modern world. By understanding what has happened in the past, and what has helped form what we have today, I hope that it will give me a firm understanding of what is required to maintain a positive society moving forward. This program offers a rigorous exploration of history, philosophy, literature, and political thought, all of which are essential to developing a well-rounded and critically engaged perspective on society. As a high-performance athlete in sailing, I recognise that the ability to think critically, engage with complex ideas, and apply ethical reasoning is not only beneficial in academic settings but also in sport and life. Ultimately, this will help me to improve my ability to critically analyse key decisions, and make better ethical choices in daily life, a profession and during sport.
