Lachlan Rogers

I am enrolled in the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedSci) degree. This is a five-year course plus one-year internship, placement, and specialty training. This will involve clinical placements across Tasmania in Burnie, Launceston, and Hobart from year 3 (my year) onwards. My cohort is the first of UTAS’s new MD course, now with an added research component that takes place in 3rd, 4th and 5th year. I chose Medicine because it is a challenging and rewarding field that balances science with the human experience. I am a curious person, with a particular interest in studying the human body and mind. I like how this course brings such a wide range of sciences and human needs together.

I am motivated by the opportunity to help people and to contribute positively to my community and society more generally. I like the teamwork-based approach to healthcare, especially when it functions with the needs of the patient at its centre. Our world is changing at an incredible pace. Through the study of medicine, I wish to both harness and be a driver of positive change. I have a particular interest in genetics, and with the continued rapid development of genomics and information technology, my generation of doctors will be at the forefront of understanding, treating, and editing diseases like never before. My involvement in elite level sports has also fostered a new appreciation of people in sport, sports medicine and getting the most out of human performance.
