Swimming. The University of Queensland. Master of Sports Coaching.

Rachael Watson

I decided to study a Masters of Sports Coaching as I want to help other athletes have the same dream as me. I am currently a few para swimmers who have a goal to compete at the Paralympics, and I want to take on more athletes and advance my skills. This is why I decided to study Masters as it will teach me all the theory behind elite athlete and development level coaching.

I will learn about high performance planning which is something I don't have much experience in, as often it's the coach who does that part for the athlete. So I will really get to learn a lot about how we put together nutrition, psychology, recovery and apply biomechanics and anatomy fundamentals to a human being. This is going to help make me a better coach and hopefully coach athletes onto the Paralympic team. I will learn how to write assignments in an academically strong way and through this writing it will help me when I need to write athlete performance reports.

This course will help my development due to the wide range of subject it offers. It looks at the whole picture and not just one single element. It will enable me to see all aspects with both lenses, as a current athlete, and as a coach. It will unlock my potential to win well in sport and life by giving me the best opportunity I have to develop future Paralympians. Not only do I have personal experience but by studying I will gain a professional skill set that hopefully the world will want to follow - that's how good I hope to be at it!
