Zoe Waters

I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering program at the University of Queensland, with the intention of majoring in chemical engineering. This integrated program provides a strong foundation in engineering principles while allowing for advanced, research-focused learning at the master’s level. Chemical engineering is a highly versatile field that applies chemistry, physics, and mathematics to develop sustainable processes in industries such as energy, water treatment, and environmental management.

I chose this course because of my deep respect for the environment and my passion for creating innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Growing up in a rural town surrounded by the natural beauty of the Bunya Mountains, I developed a strong appreciation for environmental preservation. My father, an environmental engineer, has been a major influence, exposing me to the importance of engineering in protecting natural ecosystems. This passion for sustainability led me to work at Truii, an environmental engineering firm that develops data-driven tools for environmental assessment and investment. Through this experience, I have seen firsthand how engineering and data science can drive positive environmental change.

Chemical engineering stood out as my major of choice because of its role in designing sustainable materials, reducing industrial waste, and developing cleaner energy solutions. With growing global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion, I want to contribute to engineering solutions that minimise environmental impact while supporting industrial and societal needs. By pursuing this degree, I aim to bridge my technical skills with my environmental values to create practical, data-driven solutions for a more sustainable future.
