Career Practitioner Referral Network

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) mission is to lead and enable a united high performance (HP) system that supports Australian athletes/teams to achieve podium success.

The Career Practitioner Referral Network (CPRN) enables Australia’s elite athletes access to a variety of professional career advice and guidance services.

A national network of professional career practitioners servicing athletes in all Australian states and territories, including those living regionally and internationally via ‘online’ capability. Our career practitioners have worked with high performance athletes and provide up-to-date knowledge about career development and the impact of the changing world of work.

Ahead of National Careers Week, more than a dozen athletes came together at the Victorian Institute of Sport to discuss their career move.

Career Guidance

Counselling advice to assist athletes strategically identify career options and pathways.

Requires a sound understanding or knowledge of the job or industry which interests you.

Career Planning

Defining a clear pathway of direction to meet your current and future needs during and beyond sport. Includes self-awareness, identification and reflection on athlete competencies, strengths, interests, needs and motivators to build a comprehensive Athlete Career Map with specific actions and outcomes.

This includes any administering and interpreting of vocational and behavioural assessment testings.

Career Exploration

Exploring career options aligned with your passion values, interests and strengths.

Guidance and advice on vocational and education decision making, balancing priorities in work, study, sport and life, identifying future work trends and occupations including which skills, qualifications and knowledge are most highly regarded across differing industry sectors.

Career Skill Building

Building capability in skills related to career development to support education, vocational employment or personal life-long decision making such as communication, networking and presentation skills.

Tailored advice and facilitated guidance on job searching, identifying and applying athlete transferable skills, career resilience support and advice to build reputation capability such as personal branding, networking and partnerships.

Employment Support

Support for those gaining or seeking employment including job search strategies, review of cover letters, resumes, answering selection criteria, interview preparation, referees etc.

Advice and guidance on job application processes, writing a cover letter, responding to selection criteria, building a resume, preparing and practicing for interview, responding to interview questioning, negotiating job offers and navigating other employment paperwork.

Fast Track Career Advice

One hour specific sessions to assist with confirming a career pathway interest, developing a cohesive script, providing a quick review of your resume or LinkedIn profile, or finding out basic information about a job or industry.

This is suitable for athletes requiring immediate and intensive transition support following injury or sudden retirement. As well as for athletes experiencing difficulties finding sustainable employment or who present with mental health difficulties related being employed/unemployed.

Athlete ‘Own Business’ Linkages Program

Supporting athletes in the pursuit of establishing their own business or entrepreneur pathway.

This offering provides linkages to support service providers via the Elite Athlete Entrepreneur Network for further education and learning opportunities.

Education Choices/Work Integrated Learning and Work Preparedness Support

Athletes entering study institutions and the workplace for the first time, supporting athletes preparing and striving for a promotion, and for coordinating work experience and internships.

Advice related to commencing a new job or workplace for the first time, undertaking an internship or work experience, getting a mentor, seeking a promotion or working with a recruiter or placement agency.

Eligibility

The CPRN is accessible to all current or formerly categorised athletes and current or formerly system employed coaches and High Performance staff that are athlete facing.

Categorised athletes include Level 1-5 athletes on the categorisation table in all funded National Sporting Organisations.
