Wellbeing & Engagement Principles of Practice
The Wellbeing & Engagement Principles of Practice provide a shared foundation for wellbeing practice across Australia's high performance sport system. Developed by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in collaboration with National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) and the National Institute Network (NIN), the Principles support a consistent, athlete-centred approach to wellbeing and engagement.
Aligned to Australia’s High Performance 2032+ Sport Strategy, known now as the ‘Win Well Strategy’, the Principles recognise wellbeing as a critical enabler of sustainable performance, positive athlete experiences, and long-term success in sport. They are designed to support Wellbeing & Engagement Practitioners, sporting organisations, and multidisciplinary support teams to embed wellbeing as an integral part of high performance environments.
The Principles focus on five key areas of leading practice:
- Supporting sustained high performance through integrated wellbeing practice.
- Building trust through ethical, professional, and collaborative relationships.
- Delivering holistic and individualised athlete support.
- Proactively supporting athlete transitions across the high performance pathway.
- Strengthening capability through continuous learning, reflection, and professional development.
Together, these Principles promote consistent, high-quality wellbeing support across the Australian high performance sport system and contribute to environments where athletes, coaches, and staff can thrive both within and beyond sport.
