The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) mission is to lead and enable a united high performance (HP) system that supports Australian athletes/teams to achieve podium success.

A full list of common Job Types, Titles, Sub-Titles and their Descriptors is below. This information is presented in tables according to Job Type and includes both NIN and NSO Descriptors where they differ.

Corporate / Administration

Job Title

Descriptor

Head of Organisation (i.e. CEO or equivalent)

Person ultimately responsible to the Board for the operations of the business.

COO / Business Manager

Responsible for managing the daily operation of the overall organisation. There can only be one COO in the organisation, although this role may be filled by the CEO. Where applicable the person in this position generally fills the 2IC role.

CFO / Finance Manager

The Head of Finance and responsible for managing financial risks, financial planning and financial reporting for the overall organisation. There can only be one CFO in the organisation.

Financial Controller/ Financial Accountant

Works in a financial management role and reports to the CFO, generally in larger NSOs.   This role would have direct reports with Finance Officers reporting to this position rather than the CFO.

Finance Officer

Works in a financial (eg. payables / receivables) and/or accounting/book-keeper role, reports into a more senior finance role and does not have direct reports.

Marketing / Commercial Manager

Manages the business processes that help increase or maintain revenue, eg: sponsorship, ticket sales, merchandise sales.

Marketing / Commercial Officer

Works in a marketing and commercial role for the organisation and assists the Marketing / Commercial Manager.

IT & Communications Manager

Manages the implementation and oversees the use of technology and computer systems to increase information accessibility as well as integrated systems management.

IT & Communications Officer

Works in an IT and communications support role for the organisation and assists the IT & Communications Manager.

Media & PR Officer

Primarily responsible for managing communications to a wide range of stakeholders, including but not limited to employees, funding contributors, media, influential members of the community and the general public.

Administration Manager

Provides managerial support of general operations of the organisation.

Administration Officer

Performs a range of administrative tasks within an organisation.

High Performance Management

Job Title

High Performance Director / Manager

Head of the High Performance Program and responsible for leading and implementing strategies to ensure sustained success of athletes at the elite level. This includes management and development of high performance business plans and budgets, including managing the overall support provided to athletes through coaches, SSSM support, etc. There can only be one High Performance Director in each organisation.

Institute Performance Director

Leads and manages the partnership and operations for a select group of sport programs and projects, leads a multi-disciplinary team focused on athlete performance, and may have specific responsibilities for managing the Individual Athlete Scholarship scheme/ the Talent Identification and Development program / the campaigns for Major Games and the Sport Inclusion process.

Performance Manager / Program Manager / Manager CAPS

Responsible for the overall management of “major programs” including the employment of coaches, budgets, and the oversight of the Daily Training Environment (DTE).(Senior Management / Executive level position)

Performance Support Manager

Leads and manages the operations and budget allocations for performance support staff (including science, medicine and AW&E) in their respective sports programs

Performance Services Manager

Responsible for the overall management of support services including; science, medicine, AW&E etc covering employment / management of staff and budgets. (Senior Management / Executive level position)

Coaching Director / Coaching Group Manager

Responsible for the overall management of “major programs” including the employment of coaches, budgets, and the oversight of the Daily Training Environment (DTE).(Senior Management / Executive level position)

Technical Director

Responsible for leading, developing, and  implementing the high performance plan across Australia including the effective use of available resources, co-operation with program partners and support to coaches and support staff in the network.  Accountable for results at international competition

Athlete Services Manager / Athlete & Coach Services Coordinator

Responsible for the overall management of support services including; science, medicine, AW&E etc covering employment / management of staff and budgets. (Senior Management / Executive level position)

Sport Performance Unit Manager / Performance Enhancement Services Manager

Responsible for the overall management of support services including; science, medicine, AW&E etc covering employment / management of staff and budgets. (Senior Management / Executive level position)

Chief Medical Officer

Develops and leads the clinical service delivery model within the organization. Role includes the development of clinical delivery strategy and reports directly to the CEO. 

National Teams Manager

Responsible for administrative and logistical support for national representative teams or squads; including managing budgets, travel, accommodation and competition schedules. Team managers would usually accompany athletes / teams for competitions and events nationally and internationally.

Pathways High Performance Manager

Performs a similar role to the High Performance Director, for emerging athletes.

Para High Performance Manager

Performs a similar role to the High Performance Director, for Para athletes.

High Performance Coordinator

Provides coordination and administrative support to the High Performance Program. May also work closely with and provide administrative support to the High Performance Director to implement structures and programs to develop current and future athletes.

Data Science / Data Analyst

Works closely with stakeholders (coaches, performance teams, sport sports administrators, discipline leads, HPMs and sports) to identify meaningful performance statistics and metrics. Responsibilities may include some or all of: (a) managing athlete, sport and organisational through a data management system (e.g., AMS), (b) maintaining and tracking key performance information, (c) providing analysis to support organisational and performance based decision making.
