School Swimming

Imagine your students learning to swim at the home of Australia’s sporting champions.

Our multi-award winning learn-to-swim programs teach children swimming and water safety skills in a world-class facility where many of Australia’s top and aspiring athletes train.

Our school program is competitively priced, for details please contact :swimschool@ausport.gov.au.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) mission is to lead and enable a united high performance (HP) system that supports Australian athletes/teams to achieve podium success.

The program includes:

  • 10 x 45 minute lessons
  • pool entry for each of the lessons
  • one swim cap per child
  • one certificate of achievement per child

Our lessons run at a maximum instructor to student ratio of 10:1, however classes usually run at a ratio of 8:1.

Lessons are taught in our 25m pool, which is 1.1m deep. On some occasions, lessons are taught in our 50m pool, which is 2.2m deep to allow children the opportunity to practice diving and deep water skills.

Our 10-day programs include two assessment days to ensure each child is swimming in the correct level and two water-safety days to educate students on water awareness, survival and rescue skills.

Swim safer

Students from Years K-6

This program focuses primarily on water safety while also providing students with basic swimming skills.

As a Royal Life Saving Swim and Survive Partner, our instructors are equipped to help your children learn to be safer in and around water.

We aim to educate students on water awareness, survival and rescue skills in a variety of aquatic environments.

They will spend time developing these skills in both shallow and deep water.

We also offer an optional games day to encourage children to enjoy the water while putting their newly learnt swimming skills into practice.

Learn to Swim

Students from Years K-6

The Learn to Swim program provides swimming lessons for students from beginner to advanced levels.

As a technique-focused swim school our classes are taught over shorter distances to ensure skills are executed with precision. We assess children based on their ability to perform strokes correctly, rather than on the distance they swim, placing them in the level best suited to their ability.

This program also includes two swim safer days to educate students on water awareness, survival and rescue skills in a variety of aquatic environments.

We also offer an optional games day to encourage children to enjoy the water while putting their newly learnt swimming skills into practice.

Junior squad

Students from Years 3-6

The Junior Squad program is a new initiative in 2016, aimed at those students who swim competitively and would like to improve their technique in order to achieve a competitive edge.

This program is highly technique-focused, with a strong emphasis on racing skills, including: starts, turns, finishes and diving.

Students will be challenged to swim longer distances while maintaining correct technique and pushing themselves to reach new heights.

We also offer two swim safer days to educate students on water awareness, survival and rescue skills in a variety of aquatic environments and/or an optional race day to encourage children to put their newly learnt skills to the test in a competitive environment.

Our teaching approach

The Swim School at the AIS is a technique-based swim school. Our classes are taught over shorter distances to ensure practice is executed with precision.

Our lessons are driven by and structured around our desired outcome — for every child to feel confident and comfortable in the water, have sound technique in each of their strokes and be able to save themselves or someone else in an emergency.

We assess children on their ability to perform strokes, not the distance they can swim, and place them in the level best suited to their ability.

Our instructors provide specific feedback catered to the individual developmental stage of each student. Our ultimate goal is self-regulation where each student develops a sufficient level of body awareness to correct themselves and be able to understand their own strengths and weaknesses. This is done through nurturing instruction, which builds confidence and challenges each child.

Our instructors will highlight and explain to the students the desired outcome specific to their level.

We believe students are more likely to succeed if they are aware of the goals and aims of the swimming program and the goals and aims of each individual lesson.

Most importantly, we want to assist students in achieving the goals they set for themselves! We find great benefit in students understanding why they are being taught a particular skill as they can then begin to view swimming as an important part of their day-to-day activities as well as their school curriculum. This is especially evident throughout our water safety days where students learn real-life techniques to save both themselves and others.
