AIS courts the heart of the action in September

From boccia, netball and wheelchair basketball, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) campus was buzzing with activity throughout September and there’s no sign of it slowing down.

From boccia, netball and wheelchair basketball, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) campus was buzzing with activity throughout September and there’s no sign of it slowing down.

For the first time, the Boccia Australia National Titles were held at the AIS, bringing together Paralympians, emerging athletes, coaches, referees and volunteers, for five days of competition in the Basketball and Netball Centre. 

Following its success, athletes are already looking forward to the 2025 World Boccia Challenger at the AIS Arena in November. 

“You can go all over the world for competitions, but when you bring the world to you, it's just so much more exciting. You have home fans everywhere, and it just grows the sport more in Australia,” said BC2 athlete Aaryan Shah.  

Netball fever also swept into Canberra, with the AIS hosting the Australian Diamonds, First Nations Black Swans, and the Under-21s and Under-19s across five training camps. A sixth camp was also dedicated to developing netball coaches from across the Pacific. 

The men’s national wheelchair basketball team also hit the courts, holding a selection camp ahead of the Asia Oceania Zone Championships in November.

Elsewhere on campus, the Socceroos made use of the world class facilities ahead of their Soccer Ashes victory over New Zealand, the Junior Matildas sharpened skills ahead of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers, and Swimming Australia’s Para Flippers squad focused on becoming ‘Dolphins-ready’. 

Rounding out the month are camps across hockey, rugby, pistol shooting and wrestling, bringing a total of 496 athletes, coaches and support staff to the AIS in September for 16 high performance camps across nine sports.

October is looking just as busy, with the Water Polo National State Championships kicking off this week for the country’s top Under-15 and Under-17 players.  

Also on site in October are high performance coaches in the Enhance and Aspire programs, Performance Pathway Leads in the Elevate Lead Program, and First Nations athletes and mentors in the Share a Yarn program who will come together for a Cultural Connection Camp.
