ASC expands gender equity efforts with new sports governance mentoring program

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is strengthening its commitment to gender equity in sport with the launch of a new national mentoring program for women and gender diverse board directors.
The ASC’s Sports Governance Mentoring Program will support newly appointed and elected directors across national sporting organisations (NSOs) and national sporting organisations for people with disability (NSODs).
Delivered by the Minerva Network, the 12-month program will support up to 30 eligible women and gender diverse board directors from NSOs and NSODs.
“We know that access to experienced mentors and networks can make a significant difference to confidence, contribution and long-term retention in leadership roles,” Minerva NSW Co-Chapter and Sports Governance Lead Belinda Rowe said.
“This program will connect new directors with experienced mentors and networks, helping them navigate complex board environments and contribute effectively to strengthen sports governance.”
ASC Executive General Manager Sport and Community Capability, Richard McInnes said the initiative builds on a range of education programs the ASC has in place including through the Institute of Community Directors Australia and Women Leaders in Sport initiative, to advance gender equity in sport.
“Greater diversity and capability on sporting boards strengthens sport for everyone and helps ensure people feel they belong,” McInnes said.
“This program is another important step and continues our commitment to building a strong, inclusive pipeline of leaders ready to shape the future of sport in Australia.”
Applications for the program will open in late May.
