Principles

Principles

The product design principles explore key considerations around designing and reviewing products and highlight resources which may assist. The principles are split into key phases and are built using the Drivers of Participation framework.

The principles could be used as a stepped-process from start to finish, to focus in on a key problem area for one of your current products or to create buy-in from different parts of your organisation.

Understand the participant and market

Driver of Participation: Market Insights

  • Identify, understand and engage with your target market; what are their wants, needs, barriers and motivations.
  • Understand your operating environment; what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to consider.

Design what participants want and how you can deliver on that

Driver of Participation: Product Design

  • Prioritise designing products that address the needs and wants of the target market; this could include
    • how you can overcome identified barriers and maximise their motivators
    • establishing how the product can develop the physical literacy of participants
    • the interaction they want with the deliverer, the tone of messaging that will be appealing, the environment and equipment that will maximise their experience
  • Then consider how you can deliver on this within your operating environment – this may mean things need to change!

Additional resources

Develop a business model that defines success

Driver of Participation: Commercial

  • Plan early for ongoing success; design a product business model that defines ‘success’ and considers sustainability.
  • Identify and connect with partners that will contribute to success, particularly consider what are your gaps and who can help deliver on them.

Deliverers play a key role

Driver of Participation: Workforce

  • Recognise the importance of the deliverer in the experience of the participant and ultimately the product success.
  • Identify the skills and attributes required for effective delivery and recruit based on that profile - this could be outside your current workforce.
  • Find deliverers who share your product vision and support them to deliver on that.
  • Deliverers should focus on the participants experience, embracing a physical literacy philosophy that values the holistic development of individuals.

Additional resources

Tailor messaging and communications

Driver of Participation: Marketing & Communications

  • Think of participants as customers and optimise their overall experience; find the key points where you interact with the participant and make that a positive engagement.
  • Tailor the messaging to the audience and use the right channels to reach them; make this a priority for the organisation and deliverer.

Additional resources

Innovate around places, spaces and equipment

Driver of Participation: Infrastructure & Equipment

  • Identify, create and maintain an environment that will best meet the wants and needs of the target participant. This may include: considering appropriate facilities, before during and after program activity, how the program is scheduled to best utilise facility space, equipment used in the program
  • Take innovative partnership approaches to the places and spaces where the product is delivered.
