Artificial Intelligence in Australian Sport

A Guide for Responsible AI in Sport

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way sport is played, coached, managed, and experienced in Australia and internationally. From performance analysis and injury prediction to officiating support and talent identification, AI brings powerful tools with many opportunities, but also new risks.

The purpose of this guide is to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by AI adoption to help the Australian sport sector navigate and use AI responsibly. It brings together knowledge from international best practice, national ethical principles, and insights gathered through interviews with diverse stakeholders across sport, government, and technology. Its goal is to provide clear, practical, sport-specific guidance on using AI in ways that are safe, ethical, and aligned with Australian sport values.

A Roadmap for AI in Australian Sport

Sport holds a unique position in Australian life, spanning cultural identity, economic contribution and community wellbeing. It generates substantial value through elite competition, mass participation, volunteering and fan engagement. Looking ahead, sport faces new pressures: from the demands of international competitiveness and major events, such as the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to shifts in media consumption, workforce sustainability and the need to strengthen diversity and inclusion. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a critical technology to help navigate these challenges, offering both significant opportunities and important risks that must be addressed responsibly.

This report sets out a roadmap to guide AI adoption across Australian sport. Drawing on international benchmarking, desktop research and consultations with stakeholders across government, sport, technology and community organisations, it identifies four focus areas where AI is already making an impact and where future opportunities lie.
