2019 Leadership Workshops with Professor Boris Groysberg

18 August 2020

Sport Australia and the AIS, hosted Professor Boris Groysberg from the Organizational Behaviour Unit at Harvard Business School for two days of workshops with sport executives in Melbourne on 22 and 23 July 2019. The workshops enabled participants the opportunity to apply the concepts learned to their own organisations and share their new thinking with others.

Building Sport Workforce capability across the sector is a strategic priority with focus on effective organisational leadership. Research into the workforce has identified large leadership gaps in sporting organisations. A key focus of the workshop was to provide meaningful professional development to the leaders of sports organisations.

Following a successful Senior Leadership Workshop in 2018, Professor Boris Groysberg returned in July 2019 to deliver two one-day workshops, with day one directed towards Chairs and Directors and day two towards CEO’s and Senior Executives. The workshop aim was to provide an opportunity to interact with senior sport leaders from across Australia and to engage with an advanced leadership and management curriculum.

The workshops were divided into multiple sessions, with a mixture of case discussions, lectures, group exercises and group workshops. Day one had the chairs and director discussing succession planning and working as a ‘team’ whilst fighting for survival in the arctic while day two saw the CEOs and Senior Executives “Chasing Stars” and attracting and hiring talent.

Professor Boris Groysberg is the accomplished author of Chasing Stars: The Myth of Talent and the Portability of Performance, and has written many articles and case studies on how firms hire, engage, develop, retain, and communicate with talented employees.
