Internet Domain registration changes

24 March 2022

Sports will be keen to know there is a new direct domain name type available in Australia from 24 March 2022. It is important you register your own sport and - go to auda.org.au for details on how to claim a .au domain name.

.au direct domain names – like getyour.au , opens in a new tab- are shorter, simpler domain names that will be available as a new option for Australian Internet users from 24 March 2022.

.au direct names are general purpose – they’re open to anyone with a verified connection to Australia who wants to create or manage an online presence for themselves or their organisation.

Domain names are like digital real estate. They are an important part of an organisation’s digital engagement strategy. They provide stakeholders with confidence that they are interacting with an organisation, whether on website or via email.

Individuals or organisations who currently hold a domain name in any other .au namespace (eg. com.au, org.au etc.), will be able to apply for Priority Status to register its exact match in .au direct during the six-month period from launch from 24 March.

To check priority category and/ or see if there are other registrants eligible for the .au direct name you seek, you can use auDA’s Priority status tool | auDA, opens in a new tab.
