Physical Literacy Position Statement and resources launched
18 December 2019
The Australian Government’s Sport 2030 national plan sets a target to decrease physical inactivity by 15 per cent by 2030, so improving physical literacy - especially in young people - is vital. The Physical Literacy Position Statement , opens in a new tab conveys Sport Australia’s commitment to this goal, and is also endorsed by over 60 National Sporting Organisations, physical activity providers, education bodies and key advocates.
The next phase of this important work - the activation of a physical literacy approach - is everyone's responsibility. To support organisations to embed physical literacy in their strategies, Sport Australia has released a suite of tools and resources that help bring physical literacy to life:
- ‘What is physical literacy?’animated video, opens in a new tab – introducing physical literacy in easy to understand language and explaining how important it is to develop, particularly early in life. The video helps explain what people can do to start improve the physical literacy of themselves and their children.
- Playing for Life Activity Cards, opens in a new tab – 147 game cards are now aligned to the Australian Physical Literacy Framework for everyday use by teachers, coaches, out of school hours care staff and parents. These cards are aligned to the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education (HPE), with game-based activities which are easily adapted to different sports and help create a safe, inclusive and challenging environment for children.
- Physical-Literacy-Program-Alignment-Guidelines.pdf – a step-by-step guide for sporting organisations to adapt and/or design participation products to explicitly focus on developing any desired elements of physical literacy. The Guidelines also help sporting organisations identify the desired outcomes of a program and map/align content to ensure the right elements feature correctly.
- Case Studies, opens in a new tab – a suite of examples showing how a physical literacy approach has been implemented across a range of real-life programs in various settings, stemming from learnings throughout the 2018 Physical Literacy Pilots.
