Physical literacy - the key to moving a country!

16 August 2019

Sport Australia has released the Australian Physical Literacy Framework and is preparing to launch a Position Statement on Physical Literacy. Now comes the time for activation and there are many ways to contribute to developing more physically literate Australians.

Sport 2030 prioritised the need to develop the physical literacy of Australians, particularly young Australians, as being key to solving our inactivity crisis.

Physical literacy recognises that every individual has the potential to value movement, physical activity and sport, whilst developing and maintaining positive physical activity behaviours for life.

Consequently, Sport Australia has finalised the Australian Physical Literacy Framework – this provides us a common language and developmental framework for sport, education and health to unite and get more Australians moving, more often.

At the core of the Framework is the belief that integrated learning across four domains (physical, psychological, social and cognitive) contributes to development of the whole person. This influences intervention design and assessment and is central to our strategy for tackling physical inactivity.

Activation of the framework includes:

  • Developing guidelines for NSOs to develop and/or map products to the Australian Physical Literacy Framework, particularly those delivered through Sporting Schools.
    • Example: Golf Australia has used the Framework to inform the design of a new adult participation program and to provide support to delivers on how the Framework helps modify activities based on the physical literacy needs of participants.
  • Finalising a Schools Physical Literacy Framework to help schools understand and create the ideal environment to help foster the development of children’s physical literacy through a whole-of-school approach. Sport and recreation organisations are an important cog in Physical-literacy-guide-for-schools.pdf.
  • Developing pictorial self-assessment tools for primary school-aged children, to help chart the individual physical literacy journey.
  • Releasing updated versions of the Playing for Life activity cards, mapped to the Australian Physical Literacy Framework.
