Sporting Schools program
Sporting Schools is now in its fifth year of operation and continues to exceed targets; 85% of all Australian schools are participating in the program and over 7,100 schools have received Sporting Schools funding. This has provided more than 4.7 million participant opportunities to Australian children to get active, engaged and having fun while sampling a variety of different sports.
Through Sport Australia’s partnership with 33 national sporting organisations (NSOs), the Sporting Schools program provides curriculum aligned sport and physical activity, underpinned by the quality assurance of NSO-endorsed sporting products. Several new sports have expressed interest in becoming involved in the program.
Sporting Schools has funded over 750 secondary schools and partnered with 18 NSOs in a targeted secondary school program. The targeted program for students in Years 7 and 8 aims to address the barriers that prevent teenagers from participating in sport and encourage a lifelong love of sport - particularly young females and inactive students.
The Sporting Schools program has a satisfaction rating of 97% and funding continues to be in high demand, with the program currently oversubscribed by 30% each term. In the most recent program delivery survey, 98% of schools reported that the program increased children’s opportunities to play sport.
The next stage of the evolution of Sporting Schools is currently being explored including the integration of a physical literacy framework and the expansion of the delivery network to physical activity providers.
