Sport Australia applauds Surfing Australia who recently announced new name and slogan for their high performance team the “Irukandjis” which involved extensive consultation and engagement with the Yirrgandjj people. This is a great precedent for sport.

Acting CEO Robert Dalton has applauded Surfing Australia for their new name and the slogan of “Deadly in the Water”. Most significantly, the name has been gifted by the Yirrgandji people.

Sport Australia has also developed our own Reconciliation Action Plan and looks forward to seeing further efforts across the sector in recognising Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders contribution to sport and culture.
