Cycling in Australia has the potential to grow significantly. Through One Cycling, Mountain Bike Australia, BMX Australia and Cycling Australia, are looking to bring together their organisations to capitalise on that potential and grow cycling in Australia.
One Cycling will seek to realise the benefits of coming together, while retaining the unique culture and community of each cycling discipline, including:
Sport Australia is overseeing the process of exploring the potential of making cycling, across all disciplines, one of the largest participation sports in Australia, which has been endorsed by the President and CEO of Union Cycliste Internationale.
A Steering Committee, made up of the Chair and a non-executive Director of each cycling body, plus a non-executive Director and two senior executives of Sport Australia, has been appointed to govern the project, ensure fair and equitable consultation and implementation, make key decisions, manage risks and resolve issues. Member States and Clubs will collaborate in developing the new structure and operational framework. The CEOs of each cycling body are also working to collectively define the new operational services, structure, processes and transition in consultation with the subject matter experts, current members, States and Clubs.
Ultimately, the Clubs and Members will have the final say on the establishment of One Cycling. A proposal will be developed that outlines the plan, benefits and opportunities presented by One Cycling, including the impact on Clubs and Members. Members will then have the opportunity to consider the proposal. It is expected this voting process, which will take place according to the rules of the existing cycling organisations, will happen in October and November 2019.
