New data from the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) Community Perceptions Monitor survey looked at how Australian adults were feeling in the lead up to and after the Birmingham Games.

The survey found that three-quarters (76 per cent) of Australians were interested in the Commonwealth Games before they even commenced, with 70 per cent of Australians following the 12 days of action, and 67 per cent of those who reported watching the Games seeing something that made them feel proud or want to participate in sport.

“Our athletes had a fantastic campaign in Birmingham and finishing on top of the medal table gives us a brilliant springboard towards the Victoria 2026 Games,” ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said.

And it wasn’t just standing on the podium that made us all feel proud.

Australians were also proud of and inspired to be more active watching athletes that showed commitment, dedication and displayed sportsmanship and positive behaviour.

“These athletes are important role models and the 2026 Games will be another opportunity to inspire us to get involved in sport, and to champion the role sport plays in the lives of every Australian,” Mr Perkins said.

When it came to cheering on our athletes, the most popular sports watched were swimming, athletics and cycling which included coverage of parasport events. Gymnastics, lawn bowls and netball were also fan favourites.

Almost two thirds (63 per cent) of Australians who watched the Games tuned into the Seven Network’s free-to-air television broadcast with live streaming and other media news coverage also popular ways to keep up to date.

Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips AM welcomed the findings.

“The engagement with the Games was phenomenal especially considering the time difference between Birmingham and Australia,” Mr Phillips said.

“It is clear that the Commonwealth Games Team remains an important source of pride and inspiration for Australians. Regardless of the local team we support or the state we cheer for, our club colours are always green and gold.”
