Australian primary students now have the chance to connect with an Australian high performance athlete through a new health and wellbeing program.
Australian rower Cameron Girdlestone is among three athlete ambassadors to help deliver the program.
The AIS has teamed up with Nestle to deliver The Good Village AIS Problem Solvers Program: a free interactive program that teaches students how to create a healthy, supportive and sustainable village of people.
The eight-week program can be completed over a 2, 4 or 8-week period and aligns with the Australian school curriculum, weaving in lessons in science, humanities, arts and economics.
Forming part of the program, an AIS athlete ambassador will deliver two virtual or in-person sessions where they’ll work with students to unpack a problem and design a solution.
Australian rower Cameron Girdlestone, Wheelchair Rugby player Shae Graham and Hockeyroo Edwina Bone will help deliver the program with more athletes expected to come on board in the coming weeks.
Girdlestone said he wanted to get involved because he’s passionate about helping to upskill young Australians.
“I wanted to be part of the program as a way to give back to the next generation of Aussie stars. The program is built around engagement with school children and inspiring them to have a go at everything and have fun in whatever you do. I feel honoured to be a part of that initiative.”
“These types of programs are very important for schools, they give students a great level of variety to learn and engage with the content delivered. It caters for all learning needs and everyone benefits from being involved.”
The program is available to all Australian primary schools and can be tailored for Grades 1-6. While the program is designed to be student-led, teachers will also have access to free resources including a comprehensive teaching guide.
