Measuring up to Win Well
Australia’s High Performance 2032+ Sport Strategy (HP 2032+ Strategy) lays the foundation for the high performance (HP) system to set ambitious performance goals, with a focus on creating cultures and behaviours that are safe, fair and supportive.
To measure the success of the HP 2032+ Strategy vision, ‘We win well to inspire Australians’, the Strategy outlines five broad measures:
- Performance at pinnacle events (measured by the total number of medals, total number of medallists and breath of sports)
- Wellbeing across all HP Sport environments
- Diversity and inclusion
- Perceptions of the Australian community
- System partner alignment with the roles and responsibilities in the HP2032+ Strategy
Over the past four months, extensive work has been completed to further scope and refine these overarching measures to provide the HP system with more clarity and strategic direction.
AIS Director Matti Clements said the review of the measures is critical to creating an aligned HP sport system that can successfully implement the HP2032+ Strategy.
“It’s important that we get this right and that we do it in a timely manner because the HP2032+ Strategy assumes all HP Sport System partners have aligned strategic measures and targets.
“We therefore need to finalise the measures for the system, so everyone can start planning for Paris 2024, Milan 2026, the 2026 Commonwealth Games and beyond.”
In collaboration with system partners, the methodology of each overarching measure was explored, including their measurability, validity, reliability, data sources, potential inventories and tools, statistical and analytical approaches and reporting cadence.
With the measures now in the final stage of review, AIS Measure Leads will test their findings and recommendations with the Australian Sports Commission and HP2032+ Leadership Groups and an appointed independent consultant.
The five refined measures are expected to be finalised by the end of this year, with benchmarking to follow.
