Bowls Australia (BA) has acknowledged the support and contributions provided by the Australian Institute of Sport’s (AIS) camps and performance services throughout 2022 which resulted in one of the sport’s most successful years in history.

At a special presentation in Canberra last week, BA Pathways Manager Karen Murphy AM and Para Manager Ellen Falkner visited the AIS campus to present a signed 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games Jackaroos shirt.

The Jackaroos fine-tuned their preparations for Birmingham 2022 at two high performance camps at the AIS in Canberra last March and May. In addition to their daily training environment sessions, the squad took advantage of the AIS residence of champions, gym, recovery centre and completed a range of athlete testing in the biomechanics lab.

In August, the Australian Jackaroos squad enjoyed its most successful overseas Games in history, opens in a new tab with three gold medals, and the second most successful Games which was only bettered by the five gold medals won on home soil at Gold Coast 2018.

BA National Coach and Performance Director Gary Willis said: “We have been extremely fortunate and wonderfully well supported by the AIS and Commonwealth Games Australia over many years now, particularly during our recent Birmingham 2022 campaign.

“We recently reconnected with AIS camps and their staff, and they have really given their all to support us and provide us with excellent resources to learn, develop and improve as a program.

“We cannot thank them all enough and it was fantastic that Ellen and Karen could present a small token of our appreciation on behalf of our Bowls HP program/staff, our athletes and Bowls Australia,” said Willis.

AIS Performance Services Manager Julian Jones was proud to have enhanced the squad’s ability to perform in Birmingham 2022 and beyond through the development and delivery of custom programs.

“It was fantastic to work with Bowls Australia to provide the performance solutions they required for Birmingham, but we are also pleased to see they have now adopted many of the testing and training elements into their daily training environment which will continue to move their performances forward,” said Jones.
