A busy October has kicked off a jam-packed final quarter of 2025, with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) set to play host to a flurry of events, from basketball to boccia, as well as plenty of camps.

First up, the University of Canberra Capitals kicked off their WNBL season on Saturday with a clash against the Townsville Fire, marking the first of 11 home games at the AIS Arena this summer.

It’s not the only major event booked at the Arena; from 3–11 November, the AIS will host the 2025 World Boccia Challenger, the first international boccia event to be held in Australia since 2013.

Among the stars on show will be Paralympic medallist Jamieson Leeson, who said: “I've been playing for six years but this will be my first international comp here in Australia.

“It’s super exciting to have one finally come to Australia and hopefully it's a really promising start for what the future holds.”

This month’s high performance camp activity has also been action-packed.

Volleyball Australia ran its biggest sitting volleyball camp yet as part of the growing ParaVolley program, while Boxing Australia brought together Indigenous talent from across the country for four days of connection, culture and development at its National Indigenous Development Camp.

Snow Australia also returned with a group of cross-country skiers and ski mountaineers for a series of tests in the AIS Physiology Lab, while American Football Australia was on site to prepare for this month’s IFAF Asia-Oceania Flag Football Continental Championships in China.

Overall, more than 430 athletes, coaches and support staff were on site in October for 16 high performance camps across 14 different sports.

Next month, the focus will be on Australia’s Women’s Water Polo team – the Aussie Stingers – who will spend two weeks at the AIS for a research camp focused on optimising energy levels.
