Each week during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we will highlight an athlete, coach, official, or sport who embodies Australian high performance sport’s united commitment to win well and inspire Australians. Week one belongs to Australia’s golden girl of the pool, Ariarne Titmus.

Shortly after she made history by becoming the first Australian woman since Dawn Fraser in 1956 to successfully defend a gold medal, Titmus explained that she doesn’t just compete for herself, but to inspire and motivate future generations.
While speaking to Paralympic swimming legend Ellie Cole during Channel 9’s coverage of the women’s 400m freestyle final, Titmus said:
“I’m just a little kid from Tassie who grew up on a property and moved up to the big show in Brissie for my swimming career. I feel very grateful that my family backed me and believed in me and here I am. I’m still that same person, I'm just living out my dreams and having fun and hopefully it’s an inspiration for anyone. It doesn’t matter where you come from, small town, big town, what race, religion, you can do whatever you want if you work hard.”
