Biography
Australian conductor Benjamin Northey is Professor of Conducting, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Conductor in Residence of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Director of the Australian Conducting Academy.
He has made multiple guest appearances with major international orchestras including the London Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, the Malaysian Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
He appears regularly with all major Australian symphony orchestras and has conducted numerous productions for Opera Australia, New Zealand Opera, Victorian Opera, and State Opera South Australia.
Northey studied conducting at Finland’s Sibelius Academy from 2002-2005. He completed his studies at the Stockholm Royal College of Music with Jorma Panula in 2006, following earlier conducting studies with John Hopkins OBE at the University of Melbourne Faculty of Music (2000–2002).
