Physique Considerations

Physique considerations refer to the systematic evaluation of an athlete’s body size, shape and composition as they relate to health, performance, and the specific demands of their sport. It includes the relevance of physique to athlete performance, whether physique considerations are justified, athlete eligibility and risk assessment. A physique assessment may be undertaken to better inform physique considerations.

In that case, physique considerations also include the physique assessment method selection, considerations of consent (noting that physique assessment should never be compulsory), data capture and interpretation, plus reporting, dissemination, appropriate communication and monitoring.

The goal of physique considerations is to support both performance outcomes and athlete wellbeing, always aligning dietary and conditioning interventions with evidence-based recommendations and individual athlete needs.

The Physique Considerations Operational Framework has been developed to provide a tool for athletes, practitioners, and organisations in elite sport to address physique related practices and promote a positive culture that prioritises athlete health and wellbeing while enabling respectful evidence-based performance conversations.

The multi-step framework is based on work by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) but adapted to Australian conditions. It provides a simple process and rationale that can be used by performance support practitioners, coaches, athletes, performance support managers, performance directors and sport executives, as well as parents and the athlete support network.
