Sport and Recreation

Sport, Recreation and Strategic Infrastructure (SRSI), opens in a new tab, part of the NT Government Department of People, Sport and Culture, invests in and facilitates the development of sport and active recreation across the Northern Territory. This is done through a range of activities involving the provision of information, advice, services, programs and funding. SRSI is also responsible for representing the Territory’s interests in policy and decision-making forums regarding sport and active recreation development and delivery at a national level.

Northern Territory Sports Academy (NTSA)

Para Programs, opens in a new tab. The NTSA Para Unit is part of the National Para Uplift strategy with a view to create more opportunities for individuals to engage with para-sport across various levels. The aim of the unit is to increase participation in para sport by supporting individuals, reducing barriers to engage in sport, providing development and performance pathways, and developing para sport specific coaches. The Para Programs offered through the NTSA reflect the commitment to long term athlete development and a holistic approach to individual performance development. Programs include:

  • NTSA All Abilities Sports Programs. These are a free initiative for people with a disability to explore and enjoy a variety of sports in a supportive and inclusive environment. These programs are the entry level to sport where participants will learn skills and can be progressed into development and performance pathways through talent identification.
  • NTSA Para Futures Program. In partnership with Paralympics Australia, the program supports para-athletes and individuals that have been talent identified as having the qualities to progress through to the performance pathway, helping them find sports that match their goals and abilities. The program provides Para Sport expert guidance and support, as the participant develops their skills along the performance pathway.

Total Recreation

Total Recreation, opens in a new tab was established in 1991 to acknowledge the major part that leisure plays in people's lives. People with a disability have the right to the same opportunities as other members of society to participate in sport and recreation activities. Providing community participation and access for members through the NDIS Total Recreation also delivers other sports participation and pathway opportunities partnering with both state and national sports organisations.
