Football Australia, opens in a new tab is a foundation member of the Pride in Sport program. They aim for football participants be given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success. Clubs need to ensure the safety and inclusion of all in and around our game - including LGBTQ athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans.

  • Gender Diversity Resources, opens in a new tab, Football NSW, (accessed 12 August 2025). Football NSW is committed to supporting the inclusion of gender diverse people in Football and understands this requires an appropriate balance to be reached between the interests of inclusion and ensuring a fair and safe competition for all.

Programs

  • The Flying Bats, opens in a new tab, the biggest LGBTIQIA+ women's and non-binary football club in the world was founded in 1985 in Camperdown, NSW. The two pillars of the club are football and family, so alongside games, they run dozens of social and community events each year.

News

  • Football Australia has initiated the process to develop a transgender and gender-diverse high performance inclusion policy, opens in a new tab, Football Australia, (31 March 2023). Whilst Football Australia collaborates with key football stakeholders and expert groups to develop a transgender and gender-diverse high performance inclusion policy, the current position of Football Australia pending the FWG policy development and Football Australia review, remains to allow all players to participate in the competition which best represents their gender identity. Football Australia will be adopting the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender-diverse people in sport to develop football’s own fit for purpose community guidelines.
