Other initiatives supporting children’s safety in and around water.

GoSwim, opens in a new tab. Developed by Swimming Australia, this program is focused on contemporary experiential and activity based learning opportunity, encouraging and supporting students to explore pathways allowing them to participate in both competitive and recreational swimming. This program can also be delivered as part of the Sporting Schools program.

Kidsafe Australia., opens in a new tab Established in 1979, Kidsafe is an independent, charitable organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional death and serious injury to children aged 0-15 years. Kidsafe operates in cooperation with a variety of stakeholders including government, industry, schools, hospitals, the media, community groups, voluntary organisations and individuals.

Kids Alive - Do the Five., opens in a new tab In 1988, to combat drowning, former Olympic swimming coach Laurie Lawrence created the 'Kids Alive – Do the Five' water safety program. The Kids Alive community service program educates the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of preschool drowning.

Surfers Rescue 24/7, opens in a new tab [VIC]. A free Board Rescue and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course for all surfers and recreational water users from Surfing Victoria. It provides vital training to assist in an emergency situation and could ultimately save a life. Surfing Victoria and our partners, have identified board rescue techniques that may prove to be crucial in emergency situations. This course is FREE and tailored to surfers and recreational water users who could use their surfboard or boards as a rescue tool.

  • Surfers Rescue 24/7 Online Course, opens in a new tab. This is the online version of Surfing Victoria's Surfers Rescue 24/7 course. This FREE online course provides all the education and training that is delivered in the face-to-face version of the course. It combines knowledge and skills used in board rescues, basic life support and first aid and applies them to surfers and the surf environment.
  • Surfers play crucial role in beach safety, study shows, opens in a new tab, Surfing Victoria, (10 June 2025). A first-of-its-kind study by La Trobe University has shown the critical contribution surfers make to beach safety in Victoria.

Swim Safer Week,, opens in a new tab Swim Australia (accessed 22 August 2025). Swim Safer week leads the charge in water safety awareness, continuing to prove the vital importance of learning to swim. During SWIMSAFER Week, over 500 swim schools nationwide host free float clinics and special water safety events, helping children and families build the essential foundation for confident swimming and water safety.
