Athletics

A mix of track and field events, such as running, walking, jumping, and throwing.

Athletics is a sport that includes a number of events involving running, jumping, throwing or walking. Often referred to as track & field. 1

Although athletics has been part of human activity for centuries, the earliest recorded Olympic event was the “stadion” race, a sprint of about 192 metres, with winners recorded as early as 776 BC. 1

Australia’s first recorded athletics competition took place in Sydney in 1810. In 1897, the Amateur Athletic Union of Australasia was established as the first national body to govern athletics in both Australia and New Zealand. 2

Governing body

Australian Athletics, opens in a new tab is an organisation recognised by government at all levels as the National controlling body for the sport of athletics in Australia.

After the Amateur Athletic Union of Australasia was established in 1897, New Zealand created its own national body in 1928, leading to the formation of the Amateur Athletics Union of Australia (AAU).

The Australian Women’s Amateur Athletics Union followed in 1932 and later merged with the AAU in 1978. The organisation became Athletics Australia in 1989 and was renamed Australian Athletics in 2025. 1
