Sailing
Sailing is a water sport where participants use wind-powered boats to race, navigate or compete on open water.
Sailing as a sport in Australia dates back to the 1820s with formal races being held in Sydney and Hobart.
The first Australian yacht club was established in 1837 in Launceston, Tasmania. It wasn't until 1950 that a national body for sailing, the Australian Yachting Federation, was established. 1, 3

Governing body
Australian Sailing, opens in a new tab is the national governing body for sailing in Australia and is recognised by governments at all levels as the sport's peak organisation.
History
The Australian Yachting Federation was established in 1950 and became Yachting Australia in 2001. As part of the One Sailing governance model, the organisation was renamed Australian Sailing in 2016. 3
