Squash

A racquet sport played in an enclosed court where players hit a hollow rubber ball.

Squash was introduced to Australia through the UK military with the first squash courts being established in Melbourne in 1934.

The Squash Rackets Association of Australia (SRAA) was established in 1934 as the national body for squash. 1

An estimated 4,000 Australian children [aged 0-14] participated in squash at least once in 2024. 2

An estimated 26,500 Australian women [aged 15+] and an estimated 76,000 Australian men [aged 15+] participated in squash at least once in 2024. 2

Governing body

Squash Australia, opens in a new tab is the organisation recognised by government at all levels as the National controlling body for the sport of squash in Australia.

After the establishment of the SRAA, the Australian Women's Squash Rackets Association was formed to oversee squash for women in Australia. The two organisations merged in 1986 to become the Australian Squash Rackets Association. The organisation then renamed to Squash Australia in 1990.1
