Swimming

A sport involving moving the full body through water, it helps develop fundamental water safety skills and can be a competitive or recreational activity for individuals and teams.

Swimming as a competitive sport activity emerged in Australia in the 1890's, with the first national championships held in 1894. The first national organisation, the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia, was created in 1909 to promote and manage swimming, diving and water polo competitions in Australia. 1

Governing body

Swimming Australia, opens in a new tab is the peak body recognised by government at all levels as the National controlling body for the sport of swimming in Australia.   

Following the organisation's creation in 1909, the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia became Australian Swimming Inc. in 1985, before changing in 2004 to Swimming Australia. 1, 3
