Triathlon
An endurance multisport race where competitors swim, cycle and run.
Developed in the 1970s, primarily on the West Coast of the USA, triathlon was first introduced to Australia in the early 1980s.
State triathlon association were established from 1984 before the Triathlon Federation of Australia was established in 1986. 1

Participation
An estimated 25,000 Australians [aged 15+] participated in triathlon at least once in 2024. 2
An estimated 2,500 Australian children [aged 0-14] participated in triathlon at least once in 2024. 2
An estimated 8,500 Australian women [aged 15+] and an estimated 16,500 Australian men [aged 15+] participated in triathlon at least once in 2024. 2

Governing body
AusTriathlon, opens in a new tab is an organisation recognised by government at all levels as the National controlling body for the sport of triathlon in Australia.
Triathlon Federation of Australia renamed to Triathlon Australia in 1991. In 2023, the organisation went through another rebrand to be known as AusTriathlon.
