Triathlon
Triathlon is an endurance multisport race where competitors complete swimming, cycling, and running disciplines in succession.
Developed in the 1970s, primarily on the West Coast of the USA, triathlon was first introduced to Australia in the early 1980s. 1

An estimated 32,000 Australians [aged 15+] participated in triathlon at least once in 2025. 2
An estimated 4,000 Australian children [aged 0-14] participated in triathlon at least once in 2025. 2

Governing body
AusTriathlon, opens in a new tab is the organisation recognised by governments at all levels as the national controlling body for the sport of triathlon in Australia.
History
State triathlon associations were established from 1984 before the Triathlon Federation of Australia was formed in 1986. 1
The Triathlon Federation of Australia was renamed Triathlon Australia in 1991. In 2023, the organisation became known as AusTriathlon.
