Perth and Tasmania host sport participation roadshow

Workshops to discuss the nation’s first codesigned National Sport Participation Strategy continue across the country with more than 80 people attending events in Perth and Tasmania.

Workshops to discuss the nation’s first codesigned National Sport Participation Strategy continue across the country with more than 80 people attending events in Perth and Tasmania.

The Australian Sports Commission in partnership with sector stakeholders is facilitating the development of the strategy to transform the way participation is connected, delivered and supported in Australia.

A 17-member Project Steering Group (PSG) was announced in March to support the strategy’s development with State and Territory workshops to consult and codesign with key stakeholders on early research, draft strategy themes and content.

The Tasmanian workshop was attended by ASC Commissioner Craig Redman.

“It was really good to hear first hand from Tasmanian sports some of the challenges that they face in sport participation and even better proposing some solutions moving forward that will help shape the strategy,” he said.

“It’s really great to touch base with passionate people who care about opportunities to engage in sport.”

Para Quad Tasmania which provides support and sporting programs for people living with spinal cord injury and physical disability were among a number of organisations who attended the workshop.

Sports Development Coordinator Kevin Faulkner said it was great to attend the session to hear other ideas on how to increase participation and keep people involved in sport.

PSG member and CEO of SportWest Matt Fulton, who attended the WA session said it was “incredibly exciting to see the initial workings of the group road tested, reshaped and evolved by the sport and recreation industry in WA”.

“I am even more enthused by the development of a nationally aligned, industry shaped strategy that will no doubt set the scene for Australia to capitalise on the green and gold decade ahead with a strong, vibrant and sustainable sport and recreation system,” he added.

The remaining workshops will be held in Adelaide on Friday, Sydney on 29 May, Brisbane on 1 June, Canberra on 5 June and Melbourne on 14 June.

On online survey has also opened for all Australians to have their say on the strategy’s development and ensure a broad range of views and experiences are captured.

The survey covers a range of areas including the challenges participants face and behavioural trends at grassroots levels.
