Disability
Disability can influence physical literacy through differences in participation opportunities, confidence, and perceived competence.
The benefits of participation in sport and physical activity for people with disability are consistent with those experienced by the broader population, including benefits to physical, mental, and social wellbeing, education, workforce outcomes, and more. 75, 76, 77, 78, 78 However people with disability are less likely to participate in physical activity and sport, and typically participate in fewer sports than people without disability. 52, 57, 58, 59
People with disability often report lower physical literacy than people without disability, particularly in relation to confidence, perceived competence, and participation opportunities. 57
Additional barriers to participation in sport and physical activity may contribute to the lower participation rates, including access to equipment, cost, and limited availability of facilities and people to participate with. 57
With appropriate support and inclusive opportunities, individuals with disability can develop movement skills, increase participation in physical activity and sport, and experience positive social outcomes. 60, 61, 62
