Australian Sports Commission
The Australian Government agency responsible for supporting and investing in sport at all levels.
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC), established in 1984, operates under the Australian Sports Commission Act 1989, to lead the development of the nation’s sport sector.
Governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Minister for Sport, the ASC drives participation, supports high performance through the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), and provides strategic leadership and funding across the sport system.
The AIS was opened on 26 January 1981, initially operating as a public company under the Australian Capital Territory’s Companies Ordinance, 1981. In 1986, the AIS became a Commonwealth Statutory Authority before being merged with the ASC in 1989 as part of the rationalisation of Commonwealth assistance to the sport sector.

From 2018-2022, the ASC also used the brand name Sport Australia.
Working in partnership with the sector, the ASC addresses key challenges and opportunities to strengthen sport in Australia.
