Play Well: Australia's Sport Participation Strategy

As part of the Play Well strategy's implementation, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) committed to engaging with Australia’s state-based sporting bodies, government agencies, and service providers to discuss the progress of strategic initiatives and activities related to the strategy.

Places to Play

Places to Play sets out a new, nationally aligned approach to community sport infrastructure, one that places participation outcomes at the centre of decision-making. It is not a blueprint for a single organisation, sport or level of government, but is designed to span traditional thinking about levels and jurisdictions. It is a shared plan for collective action by the system, one that recognises the different roles across the system, while uniting them around a Common Goal and a Common Ground.

Play Well Participation Data Charter (PDC)

The PDC was designed to establish a clear, collaborative framework for data collection, sharing, and governance, to reduce duplication, improve data quality and comparability and work towards a more comprehensive national picture of who is, and is not, participating in organised sport.

Affiliate Program

The Play Well Affiliate Program was launched in 2024 with the aim of expanding the Australian Sports Commission's (ASC) connection to more national sport and recreation organisations who deliver or support sporting or active recreation experiences outside of the traditional National Sporting Organisation recognition process.

As part of the Play Well strategy research was commissioned to contribute to building the evidence base for sport. This included the launch of the Play Well Research Unit (PWRU) in July 2025 as well as other related research activities.
