Role modelling positive masculinity

The challenge

Given current social commentary, including debate around ‘toxic masculinity’, intervention is needed to encourage boys to embody healthy expressions and identities of masculinity. (Wilson et al. 2021)

What we know

Positive masculinity is about showing healthy, respectful and kind attitudes and behaviours rather than the old tough ‘traditional masculinity’. The aim is to stop behaviours that are harmful for boys and young men. This is important to create broader gender equity – a world where everyone feels respected and valued.

Creating a culture of positive masculinity is a team effort. Parents, teachers, coaches, officials and other adults need to set a good example through their own actions. When boys see positive role models, they learn how to break old stereotypes, handle their emotions, and build strong social skills.

This re-shaping of stereotypical gender norms is especially important today when boys face a lot of pressure to ‘prove’ their masculinity, are exposed to high rates of aggression and violence, and hear mixed messages about what it means to be a man.

Boys and young men can grow into healthy, confident adults when they learn to be:

  • connected – forming positive relationships
  • authentic – being inclusive and kind
  • motivated – contributing to society as good people.

Insights for coaches and officials

You have a strong influence on the boys and young men through sport. If you notice someone is struggling to manage their emotions, connect with others or maintain friendships, consider a conversation with parents or a guardian. They may be able to share more information so you can work together to support him. Other ways you can help include:

  • Coaches – highlight positive male role models who show emotional intelligence, express themselves opening, build positive relationships, take responsibility and stay resilient. Create supportive environments that welcome everyone and support young men and boys to be their best.
  • Officials – focus on people who can model positive masculinity including respectful communication and healthy relationships, even when there are disagreements. Be aware of your influence and use it to promote what positive masculinity looks like in action.
